3,500t electric Sarens

Belgian international crane rental company Sarens has launched the 3,200 tonne SGC-170, a fully electric ring crane and its second most powerful land based crane after the 5,000 tonne SGC-250, and the fifth model in its heavy lift ring crane line up.

The SGC-170 features a 120 metre dual element main boom whcih can be extended with the addition of a heavy duty jib, that can be rigged to 40.5, 64.1, 87.7 or 99.5 metres, with the crane able to take 1,300 tonnes to a hook height of 200 metres. A choice of 3,500 or 4,200 tonne counterweight configurations is available.

Being truly all electric the crane has no hydraulic, pumps or motors, no oil tanks, no filters and no diesel engine, ultimately reducing maintenance requirements. A regenerative energy recovery system activates when lowering loads or moving the main boom with the electricity generated reused for crane functions or fed back to the grid, this - the company says - reduces energy consumption by up to 40 percent. Alternative the crane can be configured to collect power and story power on site.

The crane also uses fewer internal connections and larger components for faster assembly, with commissioning possible in four to six weeks from site arrival and relocation within one week.

Sarens said: "10 years ago, plugging a crane like this into the grid would've been unthinkable. Now, we've built a machine that's not only more efficient and sustainable, but one that's ready for the most demanding jobs, anywhere in the world."

The SGC-170 was developed by Sarens' R&D team at its Wolvertem, Belgium facility, with applications including offshore wind projects, petrochemical installations, infrastructure works and nuclear sites.
