Spotted by a reader in Sri Lanka, four individuals erecting scaffolding and transporting materials across a church roof, around 20 metres or more above the ground, negotiating the apex of the tiled roof as if it were a tightrope. Among them - what appeared to be a child - was recorded carrying a bucket along the precarious route. Others were doing much the same on the horizontal scaffold poles.
Two of the members of the 'high wire act' were erecting the scaffold without a harness, safety equipment, or even shoes. Access to the work area appeared to be through a top floor church window.
While it is important to remain sensitive to differing customs, construction methods and local practices, the absence of basic safety measures in this situation is striking, even for our local.
