Fassi acquires Barin

Italian loader crane manufacturer Fassi has acquired truck mounted lift and underbridge inspection platform manufacturer Barin.

The move is part of a new strategy that will see the loader crane company use Barin as the first element of a new infrastructure division, which will include solutions for the inspection of industrial plants and public infrastructure. The transaction was completed at the end of April.

Barin's chief executive, Pierpaolo Barin, a second generation family member, will remain on board and continue to manage the business, while all 50 Barin employees will join the Fassi group.

Fassi says that this acquisition, which follows close on the heels of its acquisition of Fascan in the USA, will take its revenues to around €500 million and 1,800 employees.

Fassi came under the control of London, UK, based Investindustrial Group at the end of 2023, when it acquired a 70 percent stake in the business from the Fassi family, which retains 30 percent of the equity. Barin was established in 1962 by Italo Barin, and is based in Cittadella, halfway between Vicenza and Treviso, where it has a 23,000 square metre facility. Its standard product range includes three large truck mounted lifts, with working heights of 52, 60 and 73 metres, along with eight AB light duty truck mounted underbridge inspection platforms with regular end mounted platforms, and nine ABC models of large deck type underbridge platforms. It also offers a custom design and build service to solve particular underbridge inspection challenges.

Fassi chief executive Victor Gottardi said: “The acquisition of Barin enables us to enter a new business segment and add vital expertise to our range of products and solutions for the infrastructure safety and maintenance market.”

Pierpaolo Barin added: “This is a crucial step in Barin’s growth trajectory. By joining a company of excellence such as Fassi, we aim to further expand our portfolio of solutions and technologies to serve our customers internationally.”

Vertikal Comment

Barin produced a wider range of small to medium truck mounted lifts at one time, but found success in the underbridge market, which it entered in the early 1970s. It also hit a sweet spot with a full deck ABC inspection unit mounted on a 3.5 tonne chassis. As one of the few companies in the growing underbridge inspection market, it has built up a global customer base and earned a solid reputation for its products. Its big truck mounts are less well known, but it tends to target a specialist industrial market and customer base rather than the wider, higher volume market.

This looks like a good move for both companies.
