Rail mounted Manitou

A Manitou 160ATJ self propelled boom lift has been modified for rail maintenance work in Australia.

The unit has been designed and built for John Holland Rail, one of Australia’s leading rail contractors, to work on construction and refurbishment projects across Australia.

Dubbed The Manirail 160ATJ, the new lift features a Hi-Rail drive system that runs off of the machines wheels, through a friction drive hub. The fact that the machine is equipped with four wheel drive, limited slip differentials and a differential lock helps ensure a smooth powerful drive transmission to the rail motors. The Hi-Rail device is also wired into the machines CanBus system, which then automatically activates any operational limitations, and work envelope, ensuring that it complies fully with all the requirements of AS1418.10.

Warren Williams, overhead wiring superintendent for John Holland Rail said: “We looked at several elevating work platforms to solve our access and mobility problems in relation to access to the rail track and after seeing the Manitou and hiring a machine it was clear that it was the only machine on the market that would allow us to drive up and over the track but to also cope with the issue of track ballast.”

“It goes where we want, does what we need and all in complete safety so we are extremely happy with the Manirail 160ATJ.”
