Genie’s dual capacity booms

A report we carried earlier this week included a quotation from Genie’s boom product manager Frank Schneider, who said: “Although there are other dual capacity products in the industry, the Genie dual capacity booms are the only ones which allow the operator the ability to select the desired maximum load capacity that automatically restricts the operating envelope.”

The point Schneider was making was that when the new X designation booms are started up they will not function unto the spring loaded capacity switch is operated to positively select either the 227kg unrestricted capacity or the higher capacity.

Assuming the high capacity is selected the boom controls will lock out should the platform reach the edge of the high capacity working envelope. At that point the operator must once again confirm the capacity he needs either high – in which case he will only be able to telescope in or raise the boom – or unrestricted capacity in which case he will be able to continue.

Naturally the system cannot detect those operators who lie about the capacity they need, but then neither can a regular machine. At least this system makes him consider it and forces him to log his lie via the controller.

The system is being fitted as standard to all S60 and S80 straight booms in Genies range.
