Genies Wilkerson to take on more Terex Duties

Bob Wilkerson of Genie, now Terex Aerials, will hand over some of his day to day duties at Terex Aerials to focus on the group wide Terex Improvement Process (TIP). The idea has been to take best practice from Genie and other group companies and implement them throughout the business as a whole.

Favelle Favco may be floated

Muhibba Engineering, has confirmed that it is considering floating its Crane division, Favelle Favco Cranes Holdings, on the Malaysian stock market. The group includes Favelle Favco tower and telescopic crawler cranes and Kroll tower cranes.

Coroner calls for better training after platform death

A coroner has said that he will be writing to the UK Health & Safety Executive, asking for better training for work platform users along with the introduction of better decals and guards for the controls.

Health and Safety Executive under attack

The UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have come under fire this week, Kevin Curran General Secretary of the GMB, Britain’s General Union, claimed “the current regulatory system simply isn’t working” and accused the HSE of being complacent Then the National Audit office said that the HSE will miss its construction industry target to cut accidents 60 percent by 2010.

Ashtead announce revenues for 2003/4

The Ashtead Group has announced a fall in group revenues of eight percent for the year ended April 30th 2004. In the UK “A”-Plant was down by 12 percent, while in the USA Sunbelt was up by 4 percent.

Loxam Access change at the top

Bernard Fournier, until recently Managing Director of Loxam Access in the UK has recently returned to Loxam headquarters in France. The position in the UK has been filled by Andrew Davie. Loxam have not yet released any further details on the change.

Komatsu Profits Jump by 800 percent

Komatsu Ltd of Japan, and recent entrant to the Telehandler market, announced its fiscal 2003 years results this week. Sales rose by almost 10 percent, while net profit after tax was up by 796 percent.

Caterpillar revenues rise 34 percent

Caterpillar the worlds largest producer of construction machinery has reported first quarter revenues up 34 percent and profits up by 320 percent on 2003, substantially beating its forecasts. The company has upgraded revenue and profitability expectations for the full year.

Bobcat up another 30 percent

Ingersoll Rand parent of Bobcat, the Skid Steer and Telehandler producer, saw revenues rise by over eight percent and margins improve for the first quarter of 2004, while Bobcat revenues rose by over 30 percent.

Bank lift interest rate by a quarter

As widely expected the Bank of England raised the UK base rate to 4.25 percent today. House price inflation, and the growth of the UK economy were behind the increase. Rates are predicted to continue to rise this year.

Finning report record revenues but weaker profits

Finning International Inc, parent of UK companies, Hewden Stuart PLC, Finning UK and most recently, Lex Harvey, Have announced record quarterly revenues of Canadian $ 968 million (£401 million), up almost 11 percent on the same period in 2003. Net profit is down by over 30 percent thanks to the UK businesses.

Denka and Access Platform Sales have agreed to end their exclusive distribution agreement for the UK effective from the end of April. Denka have announced that they are seeking a new distributor or Distributors to cover the UK market.

Bob Elcome joins Valla Cranes

Bob Elcome, UK regional sales manager for UpRight UK, has joined Valla cranes as UK sales Manager. Elcome moves to Valla from UpRight UK where he has been regional sales manager for a number of years. Valla UK is part of Peter Hird ltd, and the top distributor for Valla cranes worldwide.

Manitowoc-JLG complete Delta Manlift deal

Manitowoc and JLG announced last night that the sale of the Delta Manlift “Toucan” business has now been completed, much sooner than originally anticipated. The sale also includes the designs and intellectual property for the Liftlux scissor line along with the TKD and Grove self-propelled boom ranges. (Don't miss Vertikal comment at bottom)

Man dies and another is injured in scaffold fall

Two men were injured yesterday, one fatally, when they fell from a scaffolding while working on job site in Spinningfields Manchester. The Health & safety Executing have launched an investigation and closed the site.

Terex first quarter sales top US$1 billion

Terex Corp, the parent of Terex-Demag Cranes and Genie aerial lifts, a 12.5 percent sales increase to over a US$1 billion.

Manitowoc quarterly revenues up 14 percent

The Manitowoc Company has announced a 14 percent increase in its group revenues to US$412 million (UK£232 million) for the first quarter of 2004, compared to the corresponding period of 2003. Crane sales were also up by 14 percent to $252 million (£142 million).

HBG fined £150,000 for manual handling fatality

HBG Construction of London, has been fined £150,000 plus £47,000 costs for failing to ensure that persons not in their employment were not exposed to risks to their safety. The incident concerned the death of an agency worker who was struck on the head by a lintel he was lifting after a platform collapsed.

JLG does military service

JLG has been awarded a two-year contract by the US Marine Corps for the refurbishing of its Tier 1 telehandler fleet, comprising 132 Millennia Military Vehicles (MMV).

£2.3 million crane investment for ABP

Associated British Ports (ABP) South Wales has invested £2.3 million in a new fleet of cranes and material handling equipment to meet the demands of growing cargo trade at its Newport, Cardiff, Barry, Port Talbot and Swansea ports expected this year.
