Sarens CC1100 and 100 tonne Hitachi crawler cranes lift the boom of a new Liebherr P98L gantry crane into place at Immingham port.

ABP Connect commissioned the gantry crane in 2004 as part of the expansion programme at the four-berth Ro-Ro and Lo-Lo terminal to increase its container-handling capacity. The crane is an advanced design and the first of its kind to be delivered in the UK. It is expected to become fully operation by mid-May.

Container-storage space at the terminal will increase by 25 percent following the introduction of an advanced computerised container-location system, and the arrival of two new rubber-tyred gantry (RTGs) cranes, scheduled Installation in August 2005. The additional craneage will double the ports container handling capacity.

“We have seen tremendous growth in containerised traffic at Immingham, as shippers and customers take advantage of our Northern location and the easy access to the motorway system. We have carried out this expansion programme to accommodate our existing and expected growth in container volumes. With the addition of this new gantry crane, we will be able to improve vessel turnarounds and have the ability to handle two ships simultaneously.” Said ABP Connect’s Managing Director, Stephen Burgess.
