Mec enters crane market

Mec Aerial Work Platforms is entering the crane market, with the launch at Conexpo today of an eight tonne/nine ton carry deck crane, the CD-9T.

The diesel powered pick & carry crane will, says the company: “address long standing pain points with a fresh look at carry deck design, in a market segment that has seen limited change for decades.”

The company is less than specific about the new model and what ‘Pain Points’ it addresses and has not released a spec sheet yet, but says that it “offers improved sightlines for operators with a low profile design that provides 360 degree visibility”, and “provides a more comfortable workable space in its climate controlled cab, with smoother positioning and placement controls, while giving rental fleets a widely requested alternative in the 8-10 ton class." We can see that it has a three section boom plus a jib or swingaway extension and what looks like an offsetable boom nose and four wheel drive.

First impressions? 'Positive', it looks like a well designed and engineered modern product, while not abandoning the traditional carry deck layout.

And more new platforms

A 30ft self-propelled mast lift
The company will also launch a new 30ft self-propelled mast lift, the MME30 with a 10.9 metre working height from a seven section forklift type mast. It has an overall width of 830mm and stowed height of 1.98 metre stowed height and features dual AC direct front wheel drive wheel motors, AGM maintenance free batteries, an extending platform and wide tyres for reduced ground pressure.

A 46ft Hybrid telescopic boom lift
It will also unveil a prototype 46ft hybrid straight boom, the Max 46-RJ Hybrid. Again few technical details, but it looks like a classic two section boom and is topped with a 1.8 metre jib with 135 degrees of articulation and 120 degrees of horizontal rotation, four wheel drive, four wheel steer and low profile solid tyres.

Product manager/vice president David Baxter said: "Our max boom lift line offers operators a demonstrably superior experience by incorporating deluxe features like rotating jibs, multiple steering modes and high capacity as standard. With the 46-RJ Hybrid concept, we are showing how we can bring high performance capabilities into a core class.“

Other products will include the new and upgraded slab electric scissor lifts announced a week or so ago, including a prototype 4035+, a 40ft drive at full height model that is under 910mm wide. See: New MEC scissors
