CICA launches new safety training CD

The Crane Industry Council of Australia (CICA) has launched a new safety training CD entitled ‘Dogging in the Workplace’*.

The new programme is the result of a major consultation with industry and other associations over the past 12 months to develop and add to the content. The training CDs are designed to be used in-house for individual, self-paced operator training and assessment and are funded by CICA’s successful CraneSafe program.

It is designed for use by all those who work at the hook of a crane, such as slinger and riggers – doggers in Australian parlance. The CD covers the team work involved, the hazards and the ways to go about managing them with a focus on Safe Work Method Statements. The CD comes with an electronic training manual which can be printed and an assessment section.

CICA chief executive Alan Marshall said: “I am quite excited with the release of this new CD, in late May we launched the new CICA website and a few weeks later we have this new safety product launch, which is another positive achievement for our industry.”

“The CD has been developed for CICA by Stephen Holmes of GTK Training. Members may be well aware that Steve has worked with CICA to develop several computer based training CDs, the last one being ‘Safe Use of Pick & Carry Cranes’ which was released in 2011. He has done another great job on this project, with support from the CICA board and State.”

“So far the training CDs have proved to be very popular with our Members, so I am confident this new CD will be ‘snapped-up’ by industry. Importantly it adds to our existing product range, all available on our website. Other products include the Training & Work Experience Log Book, the widely respected Crane Safety Manual, more training CDs and Operator Safety Check Log Books.”

“At this time of the year we are building up to the CICA Conference, Exhibition and Crane Display. This year the industry show-case event is taking place in Adelaide 5-7 September, along with the CICA AGM, the Industry Forum, and the 2012 Lift of the Year Awards. In addition, we have the CICA Major Inspection Verification Plate initiative, the One Association Project and with the new Crane Code of Practice draft now released by Safe Work Australia, so the industry has a lot to talk about.”

*For those unfamiliar with Australian crane terms dogging refers to a slinging, signaller and rigging and a dogger is one who is trained to carry out these duties.
