Manitowoc 31000 for Chunjo

Chunjo Construction of South Korea has taken delivery of a 2,300 tonne Manitowoc 31000 crawler crane.

The new crane has joined the company’s rental fleet and is aimed at the global market for heavy lift crane rental.

The crane’s first job is at a plant operated by Posco E&C in Gwangyang, South Korea, where cutting-edge technology is making liquefied gas from low-grade coal. The crane is making a series of 12 heavy lifts, the first of which was 250 tonnes, while rigged with 55 metres of boom and a 60 metres of luffing jib.

The crane’s Variable Position Counterweight (VPC) system, which can hydraulically extend the tail swing from eight to 29 metres. It minimizes the crane’s footprint and by maintaining the cranes weight distribution over its four track set up, it helps reduce ground preparation requirements.

As part of the over deal, Chunjo also purchased three 600 tonne Manitowoc 18000 crawler cranes for its fleet, taking its fleet of these cranes to 12 – the world’s largest fleet of 18000s. In addition it operates five Manitowoc 777 crawler cranes, seven Grove 100 tonne All Terrains and 103 Grove Rough Terrain cranes and just one Potain tower crane.

Chunjo chairman Chang Hwan Jang said: “The Manitowoc 31000 has a tremendous capacity and we will be able to use it for heavy lifts on a diverse number of projects. But the real advantage is the crane’s variable counterweight which will keep the footprint of the crane manageable, giving us more space to work on the job site.”

“The partnership between our two companies dates back many years and I can attest that Manitowoc makes the best cranes in the world, whether it’s Grove, Manitowoc or Potain. This new Manitowoc 31000 is making its first lifts at the very same site as our first Manitowoc 18000, so it’s a very important and symbolic milestone for Chunjo.”
