First LTM 1150-5.4E for Mammoet

Mammoet, the Dutch International heavy lift, crane rental and heavy haulage group, has taken delivery of the very first 150 tonne Liebherr LTM 1150-5.4E hybrid All Terrain.

The five axle crane was unveiled at Bauma earlier this year and features a battery electric drive system for the superstructure, with the usual carrier mounted diesel for the chassis and as a reserve power source for the superstructure.

The battery pack is mounted on the rear of the crane, while the electric drive motor is mounted on the transmission transfer box and powers the usual drive shaft system to the superstructure hydraulics. The battery pack is said to provide up to four hours of autonomous crane operation, and can be topped up by the engine when travelling.

The new crane features the regular model’s 66 metre boom plus 10.8 to 19 metre bifold swingaway extension, which can be extended with a seven metre insert to provide a tip height of almost 95 metres and a maximum radius of 72 metres and also benefits from Liebherr’s Liccon3 control system.

The Mammoet unit is the first to go into real full time work, and follows prototype testing at Liebherr’s Ehingen facility, along with several field trials, in which Mammoet participated. Mammoet was also the first company to take Liebherr’s first electric crane – the LTC 1050-3.1E, in 2023.

Mammoet’s Peter van Oostrom said: “We examined fuel consumption data for cranes of this size and type over a random two week period in the north and south of the Netherlands and estimate that we can operate this crane fully electrically with the battery pack nine days out of ten."

"Mammoet has a history of investing in new solutions for engineered heavy lifting and transport. Our purchase of the LTM 1150-5.4E is the next step in this journey, and will help our customers drive down project emissions while supporting the growth of energy and infrastructure. Compared to the LTC1050-3.1E, the new 150 tonne crane has a battery pack, which gives us significantly more flexibility.”

Full production is expected to start in the spring.
