Mark One Hire is 45

UK rental company Mark One Hire has launched a community initiative to mark its 45th anniversary, with a commitment to support 45 projects across its home county of Essex, in southern England, throughout the year.

The ‘45 for 45 Community Commitment’ aims to provide equipment hire and training support to local groups, charities and not for profit organisations. The company said projects could include community garden work, village hall restoration and neighbourhood clean-up schemes using equipment such as access platforms and excavators.

Director, Alan Ball added: “Mark One Hire has been part of the community in Essex for 45 Years this year. The business has grown from the corner of a local Ironmongers in Hockley to having four rental centres across Essex, along with specialist centres focused on powered access and training. The 45 for 45 community commitments are our way of giving back to the community we call home.”

The company will publish project updates throughout the year and plans to conclude the initiative with a community event at its new centre on the A127 near Laindon, Basildon, along with a report covering all 45 projects.

Applications for support is now open.

Based in Essex, the company was founded in 1981 by Clive Potter, who began the company after buying a wallpaper stripper and seeing potential to hire equipment through the family ironmongers' business, Inifer Potter & Son, in Hockley. Mark Newell joined the same year, and the business traded as Potters Hire before opening a Rayleigh depot in 1987. Mark One Hire was formed in 1988 with Potter and Newell as shareholders. The two businesses were merged under the Mark One name in 1989. Rochford became the head office in 1990, while the company moved into powered access in 1998 with Niftylift booms and Genie scissor lifts. The business expanded, steadily adding a training centre and new sites in Chelmsford, Basildon and Rawreth. It returned to mini excavator and dumper rental in 2019 and launched Mark One Plant in 2020. Its aerial work platform fleet includes scissor lifts, mast booms, articulated booms, trailer lifts, mast lifts and push arounds.
