Atlas rescue underway

It looks as though German crane and excavator manufacturer Atlas, currently in administration, is to be acquired by Canada’s Buhler Versatile.

Canadian agricultural tractor manufacturer Buhler Versatile is part of Turkey’s Asko group, which also owns ELS and AXCS aerial work platform manufacturers and MST telehandlers, has signed a heads of agreement to acquire Atlas. The document will become official after it is notarised on Monday, June 8th in Hamburg.

It will then be subject to the usual approvals. The two companies have agreed not to disclose any details of the transactions, but have said that it will include all of the operating businesses - Atlas GmbH, Atlas Spare Parts, Atlas Group Services GmbH, Atlas Kompakt GmbH and the shares the company holds in UK distributor Atlas Cranes UK Ltd.

The agreement will also include “the transfer of a significant portion of the Atlas employees.” One supposes that this will be to a new company? It is also dependent on “the ‘implementation of a personnel measure, the details of which are still to be negotiated, with the aim of finding the most socially responsible solutions possible.” In other words, it will depend on how well discussions with the Atlas group Works Council go.

Atlas has in the past struggled with the Works Council, especially following its acquisition in 2010 by Fil Filipov, who struggled to make changes that he wanted. see: Atlas employees fight changes and Atlas on TV.

Asko acquired a 97 percent stake in Buhler Industries at the end of 2023 - through its Başak Traktör subsidiary - and gained full ownership in April last year. The price paid varied from $1.15 a share for the majority stake to $7.30 for the final few shares.

Vertikal Comment

This is an unexpected, but interesting turn of events. Of all the companies that might have been expected to acquire/rescue Atlas, it was not Asko, and especially through its Canadian business, Buhler.

It is possible that the company is interested in Atlas forestry cranes for Canada, and the regular loader cranes for its home market, which has major growth potential. The Atlas excavators could kick off a new business in Canada under the Versatile brand, while adding to Asko’s own excavator product line in its home and local markets under the MST brand.

There is certainly plenty of potential.
